FAQs about Fluoride Coating

What is Fluoride Coating?

Fluoride coating is the application of a high concentration of fluoride (fluorine protective paint) to the teeth’s surface after evaluation by a dentist. This coating forms a protective film on the surface of the teeth, which plays a crucial role in preventing caries and protecting the teeth. Fluoride enhances the hardness of the tooth and cavity surface, slowing down caries' development and preventing them from occurring at young ages.

How Does Fluoride Coating Work?

Fluorine protective paint is usually viscous and sweet, adheres to the tooth surface, and absorbs slowly, which is easier for children to deal with. The process of applying fluoride is quick and painless. After applying fluoride, it is generally necessary to supervise children and ensure they fast for 30 minutes to 2 hours. Using fluorine protective paint usually requires three steps:

  1. Ensuring the teeth surfaces are clean
  2. Letting the teeth dry
  3. Applying the fluorine protective paint to the teeth

How Old Does a Child Need to Be to Use Fluoride?

Parents can start using fluoride toothpaste to brush their baby's teeth from the first tooth eruption (about six months after birth). During this time, you can take your baby to the dentist for their first oral examination to assess the risk of caries. Anti-caries treatment with topical fluoride helps preserve the teeth.

How Often Should Fluoride be Applied?

It is recommended for children from 6 months to 16 years of age to regularly apply topical fluoride to prevent caries every year (within 3 to 6 months). If the dentist assesses a higher caries risk, the interval between fluoride applications may be shortened.
